About · On Set

Hanston, Kansas / Burbank, 2012

  • Principal photography was based in and around Hanston and Jetmore, Kansas, with additional work in Burbank, California.
  • The production shot six days a week. Saturday nights were the only regular rest.
  • Sheryl Porter’s house nearby served meals, crew lodging, and the interior of the Hunter’s Lair. The house originally belonged to the director’s great-grandparents, Veryl “Doc” and Irene Holmes.
  • Most interiors used a bit of fog for ambience and a retro period feel.
  • Devin T. Simmons (gaffer / stand-in / 2nd AC) took a bus from Florida to work on the film.

The 2012 short

Josh Hammond, Hannah Landberg, Brandon Stacy, and Hayley Derryberry during production of the original short film, shot in Burbank over a weekend in December 2012. Brandon is the only actor who did not reprise the same role in the feature — he plays David instead of John Allen.

Hayley and Josh, last day

Hayley and Josh during his last day on set. He and actress Kristina Hammond were expecting their first child, so the schedule was adjusted to shoot him out early. Josh reprised his role from the short shot nearly six months earlier.

Bruce’s Country Kitchen

Hayley Derryberry and Jessica Sonneborn with young fans outside Bruce’s Country Kitchen in Hanston, Kansas — the only bar/restaurant in a town of about 150 people.

Old Timers, shoot day 6

Jessica, Hannah, and Hayley with Mr. Larry Nuss and Mr. Leo Ziesch. Leo, father of producer/production designer Lance L. Ziesch, provided locations and props and restored the 1983 Chevrolet Caprice used as the sheriff’s car.

Cabin lodging

The cabin doubled as cast and crew lodging and is normally rented as a hunter’s lodge by Walt and Gwen Salmans of Hanston. The art department shifted dressing to keep the location period-correct.

Boy Scout Lake

Boy Scout Lake

Western Kansas offered few lake options. The production used Boy Scout Lake outside Jetmore as a main location with several looks in a small area.

Poor man’s process

Poor man’s process

Driving shots used a poor man’s process: a blue screen, a 1200w HMI through orange gel for morning sun, a cardboard box waved for tree shadows, and a crew member shaking the car.

Scene 1, last shot

The first scene in the film was the last one shot — December 2012 in the Toluca Lake area of Burbank, the same location as the original short, with a skeleton crew and Porter behind the camera.
